Join us as an Algorithm Engineer (m/f/d) for our Route Optimization team to improve our next generation ridesharing service.

About your team

Our mission is to provide an optimization service capable of maximizing served  customers as well as meeting operational needs derived from the requesting teams.

We are a small cross-functional team of engineers and domain experts, passionately solving the problem of assigning trips to vehicles, constrained by vehicle capacity and time windows, maximizing the customer satisfaction while also minimizing the operational costs. We run on Kubernetes and AWS, build our services in Kotlin and Go, and live by the saying: “you build it, you run it”. We strive for calm nights and weekends without incidents by delivering software with the highest engineering quality. We prioritise collaboration and knowledge exchange within the team.

What you will do

  • Identify and evaluate approaches in the dial-a-ride (DARP) domain based on scientific approaches as well as developing new ones and drive the topic of optimisation based on (meta-) heuristics. [sidenote: This is not a machine learning position, no neural networks]
  • Identified approaches are presented in depth or implemented together with the team (we program a lot in pairs).
  • Your role is not necessarily limited to theoretical modelling and algorithmic design but actually implementing the system in the form of production ready code together with the rest of the team.
  • You work in an agile environment and are happy to build incremental improvements because you know how great failing fast is :)
  • You gain knowledge also from production data and customer feedback to design and discuss the new approaches with the team.
  • If you miss something for your work (e.g., a structured environment to perform experiments or data analytics capabilities) you will pick up this topic and drive it together with the team or Product Owner.

 

What will help you to fulfill your role

  • Experience in algorithm research/development and a passion to work with algorithms such as branch-and-bound, simulated annealing, tabu-search
  • Professional experience in developing software
  • Reflection on own behaviour in the team, and accept and adapt
  • Openness to failure (take it as opportunity to learn, we all make mistakes)
  • Eagerness to learn together with the team by exchanging feedback and knowledge during pair programming and code review sessions
  • Experience in collaborative software development e.g. with Git/Github
  • Professional experience in statically typed programming languages (like Java, Kotlin, Go or C) and willingness to learn more
